Outside in to Inside Out!

The Church says: The body is a sin.
Science says: The body is a machine.
Advertising says: The body is a business.
The body says: I am a fiesta.
~Eduardo Galeano

I also love this quote from Pygmalion by George Bernard Shaw

'I will always be a flowergirl to Professor Higgins, because he will always treat me as a flower-girl and always will, but I will always be a lady to Colonel Pickering because he will always treat me as a lady and always will'.

Question

Are we products of how we are treated?
Has our past, present and future been determined by that of others?

If so, to what extent?

AND

When can we feel uninhibited, free and completely ourselves?
What can allow us this?
Is it our right?

Would love to hear your answers or thoughts.  Thanks.

  1. Personally, I feel completely myself when I'm alone and moving, but that's going to be different for every person. I'm curious to hear your thoughts on this too!

    1. I also love moving alone and feel as if I am exploring the relationship with my body without pressure to perform. It is these moments of quiet reflection that I’m at my most creative and able to discover new movements. I think I am quite a shy person in truth. When dancing alone expression and embodiment is so exhilirating and deeply moving.

    2. Yes, absolutely! That's exactly how I feel. Deeply moving for sure.

  2. Yes, I feel I can choreograph best when I'm alone with no judgement, just me and the music. I read recently in Twyla Tharps book that she films herself which I had never thought to do. I don't know if this would add an element of being watched? I love to feel the movement within the music and think this is when I feel completely myself.

  3. Thanks Rebecca. I feel many of us can identify with this personal experience when dancing alone, to be able to express without any judgment is a celebration of our individuality. This concludes how necessary expression is in a safe and supportive setting assisting all children to feel valued. As interviews are at the forefront of my research I find myself considering how to go about making the respondent at ease in order for the experience to be enjoyed but also to collect data that represents a true account of the respondent's experiences.

  4. My body is a wreck! I believe that there is a lot of influences that force us to be who we are at certain times. For example if you get into dept., there are instances where you will be obligated to in in a situation until the dept. has been paid. (not necessarily monetary). However I also believe all life situation except for medical are results from choices we make. If you choose to take a course you are at the mercy of those in control of the course. Choice is only a right, depending on where you live, and what government you live underneath. And you are only truly free within your own silent imagination. unfortunately. Experience has taught me these things. I only hope that I understand your context.

  5. I feel we are completely products of how we have been 'treated.'
Our experiences I guess form the way in which we think, act, react etc.
For me I feel 'myself' when alone, I think when with others there is always an element of considering their opinions, reactions, interactions etc.
It's important to have these moments to feel yourself and this course certainly allows reflection i think to consider this!
And your final note I think it's everyone's right to fell themselves in which ever way suits them!
